The planner

Envelope Planner

Type in this month's income, then give it away envelope by envelope. Watch the paper tape on the side count what is left. When it reaches exactly zero, the stamp comes down.

    How the planner works

    Using it

    1. Type your income for the month. Use whole dollars or cents.
    2. Rename the starter envelopes, delete the ones you do not need, and add your own.
    3. Give each envelope an amount with the slider or the number box. Arrow keys nudge both. The tape updates on every change.
    4. Open an envelope's flap for its notes, its 50/30/20 group, and a one-click button that gives it whatever is left.
    5. Get to exactly zero left. The stamp lands on the tape, and a small bar on narrow screens shows the same state.

    What it assumes

    • One month at a time, in US-style dollars and cents.
    • Every figure is something you typed. The starter envelope names are only labels, and they begin at zero.
    • PROVEN means income minus the envelopes is exactly zero, to the cent. It says nothing about whether the plan is wise.
    • Amounts are capped at ten million dollars per box to keep the arithmetic exact.
    • Saved on this device only. Clearing your browser data clears the plan.

    When the numbers fight back

    • Over by a little? Look for an envelope with a flexible amount, such as fun money or eating out, and trim it.
    • Still money left? Press "Give it the rest" on an envelope that deserves it. Savings and debt payoff are great homes.
    • Income not certain? Enter the low figure and add the extra when it actually lands.
    • Blank or invalid boxes? A blank amount counts as zero. Negative or non-numeric entries are flagged and not counted.
    • Made a mess? Use Undo right after a delete, reset or 50/30/20 fill.

Proof of Budget is a planning aid, not financial advice. It adds up the figures you provide and nothing more.
